Band of the Month: A Sequence of Ghosts

With the current music scene lacking originality, (similar breakdowns, choruses, writing structure) it is a breath of fresh air whenever one is able to find a band that breaks this monotonous trend. Kansas City's A Sequence of Ghosts are truly a group who separate themselves from the rest of the pack. With the band's independently released 2011 EP, "Hostage(s)", the guys in A Sequence of Ghosts were able to prove that they were no longer a local act, but national contenders.

From the very start of this wonderful EP, produced by Shane Frisby (The Ghost Inside-Returners, Bury Your Dead-Mosh 'n Roll) there is a sense of energy that is felt, drawing you in and setting up for what is sure to be a fantastic listen. Hostage(s) opening track, "The Enabler", sets the tone for the 17 minute long thrill ride. After a barrage of melodic riffs, pummeling drums, and intense vocals, the band is able to show their range as songwriters and musicians in tracks such as "The Hostage" (Featuring Elle Puckett of Poema) and "Reach The Shore" -my personal favorite.

While many artists can only create an over-produced studio album, which can't be replicated in a live setting, A Sequence of Ghosts live performance proves that they aren't just a product of the studio, but that they have spent countless hours perfecting their live set. I have had the honor of seeing this band three times, each more impressive than the last. One thing the room never lacks when ASOG takes the stage: energy. If this energy doesn't come from the fans, they are sure to provide it. No matter how many kids, how run-down the venue, or how many days they've been on the road, they are always excited to be playing and give it their all each and every performance.

I would recommend ASOG to anyone who has a soft spot for heavy music and melodic tunes alike. No matter what your musical taste, they are sure to deliver - with great force, musicianship, and a positive message to tie it all together. Make sure to check out their facebook page, check them out on tour, and give them a high-five. They've earned it.
